“Most of us spend our birthdays with our friends and family, but today Mr. Le Quoc Quan, a prominent Vietnamese lawyer and blogger, turned 42 alone in prison. Today, I wish Mr. Quan a birthday of good health and good spirits so that he can continue his quest to promote social justice in Vietnam. I had the honor of meeting Mr. Quan in Vietnam during my trips to Vietnam. He’s a man full of courage and love for his country.
“Last night I called and talked to Ms. Hien Nguyen, Mr. Quan’s wonderful wife to let her know that her family is in my prayers and to reassure her that I will continue to work with my colleagues in Congress to advocate for Mr. Quan’s release as well as all other voices of conscience in Vietnam.
“Please join me in sending him our wishes and prayers, as he has spent the past eight months in arbitrary detention for being a human rights defender. Defending human rights, blogging about social justice and engaging in civil actions are patriotic acts that contribute to the development of one’s country. My thoughts and best wishes are with him and his family. I call on the Government of Vietnam to release Mr. Quan immediately and unconditionally.”
