The final judgment against Ho Duy Hai who is sentenced to death for accusation of murdering two post staff is not firm, said Le Thi Nga, vice chairwoman of the Legal Committee under Vietnam’s legislative body National Assembly (NA).
Speaking at an interpellation of Vietnam’s Chief of Supreme People’s Court Truong Hoa Binh before the NA’s Standing Committee on March 13, Ms. Nga said she found dozens of evidences in the indictment which may lead to legal miscarriage.
She urged the chiefs of the Supreme People’s Vietnam and the Supreme Procuracy to carefully work on the case to ensure justice.
Meanwhile, Mr. Binh said the results of investigation are correct despite some wrongdoings during the investigation.
During the trials, Hai failed to prove his innocence, Binh added.
Relatives of Hai have been allowed to visit him in jail. Earlier, Long An provincial authorities did not permit him to meet his family.
Regarding other cases which may be legal miscarriage, Mr. Binh affirmed that the sentences against them were corrected after careful investigation and trials.
So far, only Nguyen Thanh Chan was found to be tried incorrectly and authorities have taken steps to compensate for his ten-year imprisonment, Binh noted.
In the one-party Vietnam, police torture is systemic problem. Dozens of suspected people have died during police investigation.
Last year, the communist nation adopted the UN Convention against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment which is expected to effectively deal with police torture.
