Vietnamese Cops Disciplined for Smuggling, Case Fixing

A number of police officers in Vietnam’s Central Highlands province of Dak Lak have been transferred to the provincial police department after being disciplined for involvement in smuggling and case fixing, state media reported.
One of them, Major Vo Ngoc Quang was moved to the provincial investigation team. Earlier, Quang was suspended as a district investigator for pointing gun at a team of colleagues to stop them from searching his house for illegal timber trading.
In the second case, Colonel Nguyen Buong, who was suspended from the police chief position of Cu Kuin district, will serve as head of the social crime department at the provincial police department.
Senior Colonels Cao Tien Phu and Huynh Thanh Hai, former deputy police chiefs in Cu Kuin district, were also moved up to the provincial level. Their new positions have not been revealed yet.
These police officers, together with seven others in Cu Kuin district were disciplined for taking briberies and other violations, said Colonel Nguyen Van Quy from the provincial police department.
While the transfers appeared punitive, media reports pointed out that these officers were basically promoted.

Taking bribery is punishable by at least two years in jail according to Vietnam’s Penal Code.
