Vietnamese Policeman Admits to Slapping Detained Resident Who Dies Later

After the death of 40-year-old Tinh from Ky Van commune in Ky Anh district, the police in the district have summoned Bui Ngoc Son, Nguyen Van Thanh and Cao Ngoc Thao for investigation, all three are policemen in the commune.

A policeman in Vietnam’s central province of Ha Tinh has admitted to slapping Nguyen Van Tinh in a communal police station, where Tinh was detained for gambling and died several hours later, the Thanh Nien newspaper reported.
After the death of 40-year-old Tinh from Ky Van commune in Ky Anh district, the police in the district have summoned Bui Ngoc Son, Nguyen Van Thanh and Cao Ngoc Thao for investigation, all three are policemen in the commune.
Son admitted that during the interrogation in the morning of Feb 28 he slapped Tinh slightly. The slap was so light that it could not affect Tinh’s health, said Tran Khanh Dung, the police head of Ky Van commune.
Tinh was caught red-handed gambling with his friend in his house. The communal police detained him to a local police station where he died several hours later.
The autopsy showed that Mr. Tinh had blood clots in brain.
So far, there are no specific reasons for his death nor who is responsible for that.
There have been dozens of Vietnamese dying in police stations across the nation during the past several years. Some of them were said to commit suicide while others were beaten deadly by policemen, according to state-run media.
Last year, the country ratified the UN Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment which is expected to halt police torture in the one-party communist nation.
Gambling is banned in the communist nation.
