The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has praised the recent Vietnam’s ratification of the UN Convention and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, saying the move is in line with the Vietnamese commitment to improve its human right situation.

In its press release in Bangkok on Dec 9, the OHCHR welcomes the convention ratification by Vietnam’s legislative body National Assembly in late November. The move is expected to help the country deal with rampant power abuse of the local police forces as well as ensure the tortured victims will be treated properly, it said.
The ratification will help the country improve its human rights record as it committed before being elected to the UN Human Rights Council, said Ms. Matilda Bogner, regional chief of the OHCHR.
Vietnam has ratified seven out of nine basic conventions of the UN. However, the communist nation is not fully implementing all of them.
