Nguyễn Chí Tuyến, a human rights advocate living in Vietnam was brutally beaten while walking his children home from school on May 11 in Hanoi. Photos of the attack have been posted online and the imagery is gruesome. California Senator Janet Nguyen is calling on U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam Tes Osius and Human Rights Watch to investigate.
Janet Nguyen released a statement saying, “The unwarranted act of violence and repression perpetrated against Mr.Nguyen is a blatant assault against the freedom of expression. Time and again the government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam resorts to these repressive tactics to silence the opinions of those who contradict the government.”
Tuyen Chi Nguyen was followed by 5 plain clothes police officers from Long Bien County and beaten so badly he had to be hospitalized. Nguyen suffered injuries to his face, head, arms and legs, and received six stitches before being discharged from hospital.
Tuyen Nguyen has taken part in anti-China protests in the last few years to defend the Spratly and Paracel Islands dispute. The attack is believed to be retaliation for being an outspoken advocate on democracy and environmental conservation in Vietnam.
