Police in Vietnam’s central city of Thanh Hoa have disciplined a local police officer who fired rubber bullets at a traffic violator, state media reported.
According to the decision of Colonel Le Van Nghiem, head of the city’s police department, Lieutenant Hoang Manh Trung was warned and transferred to the police unit in Dong Son ward.
On May 3, Trung fired a local resident who was riding motorbike without helmet.
Trung was suspended for violating regulations for using gun causing serious injuries for people.
Earlier, Trung went to the victim’s family and offered apology.
In order to deal with rising traffic violations, Vietnam has equipped traffic policemen with guns and rubber bullets.
Last year, traffic policemen in the northern province of Thai Nguyen also fired against two students, causing serious injuries for the motorbike driver.
A number of Vietnamese reportedly died or received severe injuries caused by traffic policemen who tried to chase them for minor violations.
