Vietnam’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga has reiterated its commitment to the principles of the United Nations Charter at a debate held by the Security Council on Monday.
The debate, centered on “Maintenance of International Peace and Security: Reflect on History, Reaffirm the Strong Commitment to the Purposes and Principles of the Charter of the UN” was conducted pursuant to China’s initiative, according to the Vietnam News Agency.
Guided by the purposes and principles of its Charter, the UN has developed to be truly universal and indispensable in coordinating international efforts to deal with global challenges, Ambassador Nga said in her statement at the event.
The UN and its members have continuously worked to cope with wars and conflicts, stepped up international cooperation efforts for development and for the protection of human rights, promoted the progressive development of international law, and strengthened democracy and justice in inter-state relations, she added.
Emphasizing that the challenges the world faces today are ever more daunting, the Vietnamese ambassador said, “This compels us to take up our collective duty to reinforce and materialize the strong commitment to the principles and purposes of the Charter, including the principles of sovereign equality, national sovereignty, territorial integrity, non-interference and peaceful settlement of disputes.”
Ambassador Nga also called for redoubling efforts to address issues such as poverty, hunger, and inequality, which are among the root causes of insecurity and instability.
The Vietnamese diplomat affirmed that Vietnam is strongly committed to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, and continues contributing to common efforts for regional and international peace, stability and security.
Vietnam is working with other ASEAN countries and partners to develop mutually agreed principles and codes of conduct, and resolve all disputes, including the East Sea issue, by peaceful measures based on international law and the UN Charter.
ASEAN is short for Association of Southeast Asian Nations that is composed of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam.
