One Vietnamese citizen in the southern province of Dong Nai died early on Wednesday [Jan 7] morning after being chased by local police, becoming the first victim of the Vietnamese police this year, according to the state-run Tuoi Tre newspaper.
According to the newspaper, Le Nguyen Xuan Thang and Pham Chi Hieu, policemen in Quang Trung commune in Thong Nhat district found Pham Duy Linh and Tran Minh Nhat violating traffic rules on local road and chased them. Mr. Linh and Mr. Nhat run and their motorbike fell, Linh died immediately while Nhat got injured.
Police in Dinh Quan district where the accident occurred detained Thanh and Hieu for investigation.
Mr. Linh, 34, became the first victim of traffic accidents driven by police chase in Vietnam this year. Last year, a number of Vietnamese died or got serious injuries after being chased by police for minor traffic violations.
Some others died after being beaten by police who used batons to attack traffic violators, according to state media.
In one-party Vietnam, the police forces have received huge government support to deal with crimes and government critics, said observers.
